Ludders Tidbits

Ludlow Brown's stab at journaling a few of life's less dull tidbits.

DAY 31 of My 2011 Obligatory Year-End Album List

Torches
Foster the People

While Foster the People may have made a smash with their song ‘Pumped Up Kicks’, they made an album that exemplified that hit. Torches has made a mark. It’s a modern focus album with some quirks of pure genius and a perfect balance of synthesized melody, raw percussion and instrumentation.

I truly enjoyed Torches and Foster the People, and I hope to see that they come out with another album in 2012.

DAY 30 of My 2011 Obligatory Year-End Album List

The King of Limbs
Radiohead

From the outset, it’s modern, brash, rhythmically intoxicating… all the while messing with your head.

The Whole Love
Wilco

Another brilliant effort from the band that continues to set the standards. Every song needs to be heard and appreciated for its brilliance.

DAY 28 of My 2011 Obligatory Year-End Album List

The Devil’s Walk
Apparat

Life is full of unfamiliar terrain and random turns made on a hopeful hunch. We are constantly lost looking for guidance on the path to ultimate nothingness. But have no fear; Apparat’s new album The Devil’s Walk is an ideal companion for any mistakes made along the way.

Bon Iver

DAY 26 of My 2011 Obligatory Year-End Album List

The King is Dead
The Decemberists

The evolution of this band continues as Colin Meloy makes his shift from British influences to American ones. Stripped back, yet giving us lush, grand stories in three-minute songs.

DAY 25 of My 2011 Obligatory Year-End Album List

Ukulele Songs
Eddie Vedder

Ed Vedder does something really difficult in this album. He uses a small instrument, perfect for songwriting, but too simple to be a solo instrument, embracing the ukulele’s inherit playfulness and revels in the intimate nature of one man and his instrument.

DAY 24 of My 2011 Obligatory Year-End Album List

Hurry Up We’re Dreaming
M83

In this day and age, the words “epic” and “awesome” have all but lost their original meaning. When someone finds a penny on the ground? “Awesome.” You got that class you applied for? “Epic.” They’ve become not much more than placeholder words for general signs of approval. But every now and then something comes along that truly deserves those words. That something is M83’s double album.

DAY 23 of My 2011 Obligatory Year-End Album List

Helplessness Blues
Fleet Foxes

Harmonies so rich you’ll find it hard to take in on first listen. The album that makes you sit and listen and take in every sound and word you hear.

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds
Noel Gallagher

He waited until he was ready and released an album of songs which remind us why he has written some of the greatest anthems of the past 20 years.
